Battle of the Shaky Heads: The Best Shaky Head Jigs for Clear vs. Murky Fishing

When you're fishing for bass, every decision counts, including which shaky head you tie on. Stand-up shaky heads and regular (round or football style) shaky heads both catch fish, but they shine in different situations. Here's how to choose.

The Stand-Up Shaky Head

Stand-Up Shaky Head Jig

Stand-up shaky head jigs are shaped so that when they rest on the bottom, the hook and bait angle upward. A worm standing tail-up looks like a feeding or defensive creature, and it's easy for bass to see and grab. Shake the rod tip in place to make the tail quiver without moving the bait much. Prefer lead? We also offer lead stand-up shaky heads.

The Regular Shaky Head

Regular shaky head jigs rest in a more horizontal position and keep the bait closer to the bottom. Dragged and hopped slowly, they imitate worms, crawfish and gobies moving along the bottom, and they kick up a little sediment as they go.

How They Compare

Feature Stand-Up Shaky Head Regular Shaky Head
Water clarity Great in clear water, where bass can see the upright bait. Works in clear or stained water. Bottom contact helps in murky water.
Bottom type Hard bottoms like rock, gravel and sand, where it stands up best. Mud, sand and gravel, where dragging stirs up the bottom.
Presentation Shake in place with the bait angled up. Slow drags and hops close to the bottom.
Snags The upright hook can ride over some obstructions, but any exposed hook can snag in rock. Slightly more prone to wedging in cracks when dragged.
Best for Bass, especially pressured fish in clear lakes. Bass, plus walleye and other bottom-feeding species.

Tips for Both

  • Use a straight-tail or finesse worm, rigged so it's straight and weedless.
  • Spinning gear with light 8-strand braid and a fluorocarbon leader gives you feel and stealth.
  • Tungsten heads are smaller than lead at the same weight, so you get more feel and fewer hang-ups.

Carry both styles and let the fish tell you which one they want. Shop all tungsten jigs, and read Jig Fishing: Essential Tips and Techniques.
