Braid is the most popular line in bass fishing for good reason: it's strong, thin, sensitive and cuts through grass. But the best braid setup for a frog is very different from the best setup for a drop shot. Here's how to set up braid for every major bass technique.
Frogs and Heavy Cover
- Braid: 50 to 65 lb
- Leader: None. Straight braid floats, keeps the frog's nose up and cuts through pads and slop.
- Color: Moss Green or Green Camo blend into vegetation.
- Why: You need power to drive frog hooks and drag fish out of the mat. Read Top 3 Frog Fishing Tips and shop hollow body frogs.
Flipping and Punching
- Braid: 50 to 65 lb
- Leader: Usually none in heavy cover.
- Gear: Tungsten flipping weights or punch weights and EWG hooks.
- Why: Zero stretch means instant hooksets and the strength to winch fish out before they wrap you up.
Jigs, Texas Rigs and Swim Jigs
- Braid: 30 to 50 lb
- Leader: Straight braid in grass; a 15 to 20 lb fluorocarbon leader in clearer water or around rock.
- Gear: Tungsten jigs and swim jigs.
- Why: Braid's sensitivity helps you feel jig bites at long distance.
Spinnerbaits and Bladed Jigs
- Braid: 30 to 50 lb, often with a fluorocarbon leader.
- Gear: Tungsten spinnerbaits and bladed swim jigs.
- Tip: Bass often hit moving baits hard. A slightly softer rod or a leader adds a little forgiveness.
Finesse: Drop Shot, Ned Rig, Shaky Head and Wacky
- Braid: 10 to 20 lb on spinning gear. 8-strand braid casts especially well on spinning reels.
- Leader: 6 to 12 lb fluorocarbon, about 6 to 12 feet long.
- Color: Hi-vis lets you watch for the subtle line jumps finesse bites often produce.
- Gear: Drop shot hooks, Ned heads, shaky heads, and wacky worms with O-rings.
Topwater
- Braid: 30 to 50 lb, often with a short mono leader. Mono floats and its stretch helps keep treble hooks pinned.

Which Braid to Buy
- 4-strand braid (6-100 lb): tough and great value for heavy cover rods.
- 8-strand braid (10-300 lb): smooth and long-casting for spinning and casting gear.
- No Fade braid: keeps its color longer.
