Buying Braided Line in Bulk: How Much You Need and How to Store It

Reaction Tackle braided fishing line bulk spools in many colors

Reaction Tackle |

If you fish more than one rod, or you respool every season, buying braid one small spool at a time adds up. Reaction Tackle braid comes in spools from 150 yards up to 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000 yards. Here's how to figure out what you need.

Step 1: Check Your Reel Capacity

Every reel has a line capacity, usually printed on the spool or listed in the manual, such as "20 lb braid / 150 yds." Write down the capacity for each reel you plan to fill and the pound test you'll use. If your reel only lists mono capacity, remember that braid is much thinner at the same strength, so more braid fits than mono.

Step 2: Decide on Backing

You don't always need to fill a reel with braid. Many anglers put mono backing on the bottom of the spool and only use as much braid as they'll ever cast or have a fish run off, often 100 to 150 yards on bass and walleye reels. Backing also keeps braid from slipping on the spool. See How to Spool Braided Line.

Step 3: Add It Up

Add the yards you need for each reel that uses the same pound test and color. For example, if you have four bass reels that each take about 150 yards of the same braid, that's about 600 yards, plus a little extra for retying and trimming over the season.

Step 4: Pick the Right Spool Size

  • 150 to 300 yards: One reel, or trying a new color or size.
  • 500 yards: Two or three reels, or one reel with refills.
  • 1,000 to 1,500 yards: Several reels, a family or a fishing club.
  • 3,000 yards: Guides, tournament anglers, tackle shops, trolling setups that need lots of backing, or anglers who want line for years.

Larger spools usually cost less per yard. Compare the per-yard cost on the product page for the size and color you want.

Flip Your Line to Double Its Life

Braid wears mostly on the first several yards. Instead of replacing the whole spool, you can reverse the line so the fresh end is on top. Many anglers get two seasons out of one fill this way.

How to Store Bulk Braid

  • Keep spools in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Store them in a tackle bag or bin to keep dust and moisture out.
  • Secure the tag end with the spool's clip or a rubber band so it doesn't unravel.
  • Braid doesn't break down from UV light the way mono does, so it stores well. No Fade braid also keeps its color longer.

Bulk Braid Options

  • 4-strand braid: 6 to 100 lb, 150 to 3,000 yards. Great value for filling lots of reels and for backing.
  • 8-strand braid: 10 to 300 lb, 150 to 3,000 yards. Smooth and long-casting.
  • Hollow core braid: up to 2,500 yards for big game and splicing.
